This astounding 1966-1968 Dexter Press Baseball archive offers the hobbyist perhaps the most complete view at the production process of a card series in history. Spanning three years and multiple issues, this thoroughly mixed behemoth includes (700+) autographs, several hundred original negatives and a smaller percentage of finished product postcards. Unreleased negatives and players are also present. Each autograph was obtained by the respective player at Spring Training and is found in multi and single-signed paper slip formats. The original endorsements were replicated by the publisher and placed as facsimiles on the backs and fronts of released product. Due to the demand for quality by Dexter Press, the majority of autographs grade in the (“9”) range.

Upon evaluation by James Spence Authentications, it was determined that approximately 25% of the signatures were enhanced by the publisher as a means to create a stronger facsimile autograph. Due to time and expense of the authentication process, additional endorsements may have also been modified by Dexter Press. Keynote signatures include: Signed Hall of Famers: Clemente (full photo LOA from JSA), Mantle (enhanced), Mays (enhanced), (5) Stargell (one enhanced, one triple-signed); Signed Stars: (4) Rose (one enhanced, one double-signed); Key Deceased: (4) Cash (one double-signed), (3) Farrell (one double-signed), Gilliam, Hoak (d.1969, double-signed), E. Howard, Moose (triple-signed), (4) Oyler (one triple-signed) and (2) Uecker. Auction LOA from JSA.

Also present are several hundred original negatives, many of which were used to create the mass released product. These negatives are found in various dimensions and several include cropping and additional editor’s marks. Aside from superficial wear, these negatives have survived the decades in fine condition. Highlighted players include: Key Negatives: (2) Clemente, (2) Mantle, Mays and Rose.

Note: It is presumed that multiple “complete packages” (autograph, released negatives, final postcards) are present. However, due to the scattered status of this collection, constraints do not allow the time to give an exact count. It is confirmed that the 1968 Dexter Press Roberto Clemente premium is complete although the facsimile autograph on the reverse is different than the offered signature.
