Superior baseball tactician Herman “Germany” Schaefer was a major league infielder know for comedic ploys and artful deceptions during his 1901-1918 MLB playing career. Fittingly, this amusing trickster is presented in an original Harris & Ewing photo accompanied by the caption “Washington Team’s Comedian and its Cuban Outfielder”. Stamped on the reverse with credits for the Harris & Ewing Studio and photographer Paul Thompson, this 5x7 photo is a marvel of preservation, reporting in remarkable condition with a clean, glossy surface, white borders and only minor peripheral wear including a light corner crease at top, which is confined to the white border area without affecting the image area.
This classic image shows fan favorite Schaefer shaking hands with 1913 Washington Senators rookie Merito Acosta who went on to a highly successful career that earned him a spot in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. The attached blurb at bottom has transferred through to the photo obverse in the form of full width stress line, which is unobtrusive and does diminish the broad appeal of this antique image. This printed blurb refers to Schaefer as “the Washington American League team’s allround comedian and pinch hitter”, contributing to his lasting legacy as one of baseball great characters.
